Reticulate Whipray /Stingrays (തിരണ്ടി മത്സ്യം)

തിരണ്ടി മത്സ്യത്തിന് തലയ്ക്കു മുകളിലാണ് കണ്ണ്. എന്തുകൊണ്ട്?

തിരണ്ടികൾ കടലിനടിത്തട്ടിലുള്ള ചെളിയിൽ പൂണ്ടാണ് കിടക്കുന്നത്. അപ്പോൾ അവയുടെ വാലും കണ്ണുകളും മാത്രമേ പുറത്തു കാണാൻ കഴിയു. അപൂർവമായി മാത്രമേ അവ മുകൾപ്പരപ്പിലേക്കു വരാറുള്ളൂ. ഭക്ഷണസമയത്തു അവ ആഴമുള്ള സ്ഥലങ്ങളിൽ  ആയിരിക്കും തമ്പടിക്കുക. ഇത്തരം സന്ദർഭങ്ങളിൽ പതിയിരുന്നു ഇര പിടിക്കുന്നതിനും ശത്രുക്കളുടെ സാന്നിധ്യം അറിയുന്നതിനും കണ്ണുകളുടെ ഈ പ്രേത്യേകത സഹായിക്കുന്നു.

Stingrays have eyes on their dorsal or top surface, which allows them to see prey moving above them while they are hiding in the sand. They also have good low-light vision. However, since stingrays can only see the areas above and around their bodies, they have developed good senses of touch and smell to find food.
