Living things have special features called adaptations that help them to survive in their surroundings. By observing plants and animals around us, we can learn how nature has given them special features to meet their needs. Every adaptation shows how wonderfully nature help living things survive.
HOW DO ADAPTATIONS HELP LIVING THINGS?
Adaptations are special features or behaviours that help plants and animals survive in their surroundings. They help living things meet their basic needs and stay safe.
ADAPTATION HELP LIVING THINGS TO
# Get food easily from their surroundings.
# Find and store water when water is scarce.
# Live comfortably in different habitats such as deserts, forests, oceans and icy regions.
# Survice sxtreme weather such as heat, cold, wind or heavy rain.
# Movie easily to find food, water and shelter.
Every plant and animal has its own special adaptations. These adaptations help living things live safely and successfully in their habitats.
FISH
Fish spend their entire lives in water. The breathe through gills, which help them use oxygen from water. Their streamlined body help them swim quickly and smoothly. Fins help them move, balance and change direction while swimming. Some fish even have colourful scales that help them hide from enemies.
CACTUS
The cactus grows in hot deserts where rainfall is very low. Its leaves are changed into sharp spines that reduce water loss and protect it from animals. The thick green stem stores water and make food through photosynthesis. Long roots spread deep and wide in the soil to absorb every drop of water available.
CAMEL
Camels are perfectly adapted to life in deserts. Their broad flat feet help them walk easily on soft sand without sinking. Long eyelashes and closable nostrils protect them from blowing sand. The hump stores fat, which gives the camel energy when food is not available. Camels can survive for many days without drinking water.
