On the New Moon day the sun,the moon and the earth come in a straight line. The part of the moon that faces the earth appear to be dark because the sunlight doesnot fall on that part.
The moon is not seen at all when the part of the moon that does not get sunlight faces the earth. This day is called New Moon day (Amavasi or Karuthavavu).
കറുത്തവാവ്/അമാവാസി
ചന്ദ്രന്റെ ഭൂമിക്കു ചുറ്റുമുള്ള കറക്കത്തിൽ 29 അല്ലെങ്കിൽ 30 ദിവസത്തിൽ ഒന്ന് എന്ന കണക്കിൽ ചന്ദ്രൻ സൂര്യന്റേയും ഭൂമിയുടെയും ഇടയിൽ വരും. ഈ സമയം ചന്ദ്രന്റെ സൂര്യനു എതിരായുള്ള ഭാഗം ഭൂമിയെ അഭിമുഖീകരിക്കുന്നതിനാൽ ചന്ദ്രനെ നഗ്നനേത്രങ്ങൾക്കു ദൃശ്യമാകില്ല. ഇങ്ങനെ ചന്ദ്രന്റെ പ്രകാശിതമല്ലാത്ത ഭാഗം ഭൂമിക്ക് അഭിമുഖമായി വരുന്ന ദിവസമാമാണ് അമാവാസി അഥവാ കറുത്തവാവ്. എന്ന് പറയുന്നത്.
Full Moon
When the sun, the earth and the moon come in a straight line. The part of the moon where sunlight falls faces the earth. The day on which the illuminated part of the moon is fully visible from the earth is called Full Moon day (Pournami or Veluthavavu).
വെളുത്തവാവ്/പൗർണ്ണമി
ചന്ദ്രന്റെ പ്രകാശിതമായ ഭാഗം പൂർണമായും ഭൂമിക്ക് അഭിമുഖമായി വരുന്ന ദിനമാണ് പൗർണ്ണമി അഥവാ വെളുത്ത വാവ്. ഭൂമിയിൽ നിന്നു നോക്കുമ്പാൾ സൂര്യനും ചന്ദ്രനും എതിർ ദിശയിൽ നിലകാള്ളുന്നതിനാൽ ചന്ദ്രന്റെ സൂര്യപ്രകാശമേൽക്കുന്ന ഭാഗം പൂർണമായി ഭൂമിയിൽ നിന്നും ദൃശ്യമാകുന്നത്. സൂര്യനും, ഭുമിയും, ചന്ദ്രനും കൃത്യം ഒരേ രേഖയിൽത്തന്നെ വരുകയാണെങ്കിൽ ഭൂമിയുടെ നിഴൽ ചന്ദ്രൻ പതിക്കുകയും തന്മൂലം ചന്ദ്രഗ്രഹണം സംഭവിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യും. വെളുത്തവാവ് ദിവസം സൂര്യഗ്രഹണം ഉണ്ടാകില്ല.
